舟形町から流れる最上川は、巨木や名木が多くある大蔵村へ流れる。最上川の支川・銅山川の上流に、開湯1200年の歴史を持つ肘折温泉がある。湯治場の面影を色濃く残す温泉街で、曲がりくねった路地では浴衣姿の湯治客が行きかう。さらに上流には黄金温泉、石抱温泉がある。
